Albert Einstein, nato a Ulm (Germania) il 14 marzo 1879, è stato una delle massime personalità del secolo appena trascorso. Morto a Princeton, Usa, il 18 aprile 1955, il grande scienziato spiega in questo audio il concetto della formula che sta alla base della sua teoria generale della relatività: E=mc2. Molti l’hanno sentita nominare o sanno associarla al nome di Einstein, ma pochi forse ne conoscono il significato.

LE PAROLE DI EINSTEIN: “It followed from the special theory of relativity that mass and energy are both but different manifestations of the same thing — a somewhat unfamilar conception for the average mind. Furthermore, the equation E is equal to m c-squared, in which energy is put equal to mass, multiplied by the square of the velocity of light, showed that very small amounts of mass may be converted into a very large amount of energy and vice versa. The mass and energy were in fact equivalent, according to the formula mentioned before. This was demonstrated by Cockcroft and Walton in 1932, experimentally.”

TRADUZIONE: “Dalla teoria generale della relatività si ricava che massa ed energia sono entrambe differenti manifestazioni della stessa cosa – un concetto non di immediata comprensione per l’uomo della strada. Inoltre, l’equazione E uguale a m moltiplicato per c elevata al quadrato, che significa che l’energia è uguale alla massa moltiplicata per il quadrato della velocità della luce, mostra che piccolissime quantità di massa possono essere trasformate in una immensa quantità di energia e viceversa. La massa e l’energia sono infatti equivalenti, secondo la formula appena citata. Questo è stato dimostrato da Cockroft e Walton nel 1932 in un esperimento”.
